Homeward Bound

In the end, everything works out. And if it isn’t working out, it’s not the end yet.

African Saying quoted by Ryan Snider of Socially Responsible Safaris

“Your flight has been cancelled due to an airport security strike in Germany.” Stunned, I didn’t know how to reply to this declaration at the Lufthansa check-in desk in the Nairobi airport. I'd been waiting for months to go on this safari and after an exhilarating (and exhausting) two and a half weeks, I was ready to come home. This adventure was full of surprises right up to the departure gate. Suddenly the exit door was closed.

Sleeping Leopard - Maasai Mara

I did not envy the agent trying to reroute passengers with destinations all over the globe. Miracle of miracles, after 20 minutes she came up with a plan that got me home the same day as originally scheduled albeit several hours later. Leave at 4:40 am the next morning from Nairobi - Cairo - Warsaw - Toronto. Talk about the long road home.

Evening Game Drive Sarara

I arrived at the airport the evening of Jan. 31st cleaned up and ready for my 24 hour flight. At 3:00 am February 1st, I returned to the airport - tired, disheveled, no makeup, plus an upset tummy from a late-night mediocre dinner. Not a pretty picture. Pepto Bismal and Imodium became my travel companions as I zig-zagged through North Africa, Eastern Europe and then transatlantic. At least I got to add 2 more countries to my travel history (trying to find the silver lining here).

Our Samburu guides at Elephant Rock

Re-entry was tough. It has taken me a few days for my system to settle and feel like I have my feet and brain back in Canada. No matter, I’m back! It was an amazing time – Kenya never disappoints. It was wonderful to be on safari with good friends. I loved introducing them to Kenyan people and places dear to my heart.

Champagne welcome at the Olare Motorogi Airstrip

Kenya is lush and green from weeks of unseasonable rains. Such a relief after the terrible drought of the past 3 years. The animals are fat and contented.

The Amboseli Plain - a total turnaround from the dust bowl of 2022

I’m deeply grateful to the friends who joined me on this adventure. The company we keep truly shapes the journey. I have over 11K images to download and many stories to share. I hope you will follow along in the coming weeks!
